I absolutely love my Kindle.
Wow, thanks for all the input! 13:48 hit it on the head for me--the slow page reload, the small size, and having to push the button hard. (There is another way to turn the pages by dragging your finger on the small screen at the bottom, but I didn't get the hang of it while I was in the store.) I think I will go back and take another look at the kindle.
What about reading one of these (Nook, Kindle, or Ipad) while on the treadmill running? I'm looking at the Nook Color because I would like the option reading of library books while I'm stuck inside on the treadmill this winter. Recommendations or insights?

I'm a public librarian so it kills me to say this but I've handled both and if you want a dedicated e-reader the Kindle is a superior device--at least this year.
As others have noted the e-ink screen isn't as sharp on the Nook and the page turn is slower. I also find not having a back-lit screen easier on the eyes but that may be personal preference. Don't forget about battery life. The color touch screen is beautiful but it uses a lot of power and you'll be charging that baby every 3-4 days. The kindle's battery lasts about a month if you turn the wi-fi off. I will say though that if you'll be putting picture books on the device for your children then obviously having the color screen of the Nook is superior to the Kindle. Also, someone mentioned earlier that you can't "lend" titles to friends with the kindle but that's not true anymore. Although you can only lend each title once and that's only if the publisher allows it. I believe it's the same parameters with the Nook. Needless to say I'm a HUGE fan of public libraries so if lending is your #1 priority get yourself a Nook or Sony e-reader and start downloading! One last thing to add: some of you asked about the iPad and again, if you just want a dedicated e-reader it's a bit overkill, but according to Overdrive iPad compatibility is "coming soon"! |
NP here. Question to the librarian: someone mentioned that it might be difficult to get ahold of some books from the libraries and that limited the attractiveness of having the Nook or e-Reader. Have you found this to be the case?
Not the librarian, but I have a nook and I've not had any issues getting books through the fairfax county system. You can get on a waitlist - and may do have waitlists - but I've never waited more than 10 days for any book.
