Only one member of staff supervising 6 toddlers at daycare?

I wish it were like this in VA. Should be.

Absolutely! I can't believe that home day cares in VA only need on provider! What if something happens to the provider while she is watching the children? Ahh, the more I think about what could happen the sicker I feel.

Sorrry, I mean "one provider."

Well, you do have to be in good health to be a provider. Maybe it's just because I have always been the only one caring for the children but honestly does that mean when I was raising my children I should never have been alone? I wonder how many states have the reg that there must never be just one provider?

Our DC regulator told me it is because if the teacher fainted/passed out/dropped dead, there is another adult in the room to look after the children and call for help!

We got inspected once, and two teachers were with the children early in the morning, and one of them walked THREE FEET out of the classroom to open the door for the inspector, and we were written up in violation of not having two adults with the kids. Oh, and BTW, there were only two children there! We were told we would need three people there in the morning, two with the children, and one to open the door for arriving families.

well then I just discoveredt hat my home daycare, which I'm happy with, is in violation. There are 2 teachers at all times for 6 kids (3 teachers some of the time) but they use two rooms and often one teacher is with the babies in one roomand the other is with the toddlers.

Frankly, the "2 providers in each classroom" should be the rule in ALL states. And as for your comment about raising your own children. There are huge difference between raising your own children and taking on the responsibility of caring for other children in a daycare scenario.

Ugh, sorry-just noticed the grammatical errors in my PP...

It has nothing to do with raising your own children - you're getting PAID to take care of other children. I live in VA and had no idea the rules for home daycares were this lax... I'm glad I chose to put my children in a center.

I was actually speaking about the comment exploring the idea that the two person rule was so if someone fainted or dropped dead there would be another person to care for the children and call for help. I am well aware of my responsibility, and have been blessed with caring for many children on a long term basis so I must be doing something right I will ask parents today what they think of this 2 person reg in other states I am curious to see the response from them. The care I provide is much different than a center but the rules are definately not lax, it is another home where children learn, play and grow much like a second home. We are bound by pages of regs about safety, education, nutrition, inspections etc. All family members are background checked, even my other children as they turned age 16. My oldest daughter loves caring for kids and explored a job in a center, she hated it and said "it's not at all like what you do mom, noone really CARES for the kids there they just do what they have to but they don't love them" as a Mom looking for care when I worked outside the home the turnover rate at the larger centers really turned me off, kids don't know who their caregiver is day to day...........There are many reasons why people choose different types of child care, and if having 2 people present at all times is important, then thats a parent choice of course. I just have never seen this come up, it never occured to me that that was of importance to some...................

DC ratios are different.

I just want to scream!!! In DC there has to be 2 people in each room at all times. It has nothing to do with what parents want. If you are in VA do what ever the hell you want and the same with MD. In DC there must be 2 people at all times.
