I think your best option is to start getting professional highlights. Yes, it can be expensive, but you'll get the best results. I have black hair and grays here and there and dark brown highlights work really well to cover. Looks fairly natural and grows out much better than having all over color. I do have to go in every 5 weeks to get it done though.
Just go gray. The maintenance for keeping roots showing against dark hair is not worth it, and when you finally have to throw in the towel and grow the gray out, you will have an awful year.
Highlights, three times a year. Budget $400 a year for it.
i tried highlights and they damaged my hair. currently growing them out. i have dark hair so i am looking for another option besides coloring my hair every 5 weeks....

I guess I am lucky (other than I am old..so maybe not that lucky)...just starting getting them this year at 40. I have medium dark brown hair as well. I HATE highlights in my hair...even expensive reputable salon ones.
Sooo...I have a little colony after a recent bout of non-sleep at the crown of my head. I have been doing what some of the others are doing..pluck them with tweezers. Unfortunately- I think mine will be getting worse in the next year or so given my age. I saw that Ande McDowell does that add for the 'root' color thing...it's like a mini-comb to do just roots...was wondering if anyone has tried that. I don't want an all-over process. |
