If you travel a lot do your older teens still have jobs?

Older teens who work often have to skip plans.

This.

One of my kids is lifeguarding. It's pretty flexible in that the kids arrange their own subs when they're going to be out, and there are plenty of people to cover shifts. So as soon as the shift schedule was released, he figured out which days he'll be gone and lined up subs for those days.

We arranged our summer vacation to be right before the kids go back to school in August, so my other teen who is working at a more traditional retail job just named his availability as mid-June through the first week of August, and he'll quit right before going on vacation and then back to school (not planning to work during the school year). I was a little surprised that they were still happy to hire him knowing he'd only be there for 8 weeks, but it wasn't an issue.

It does cut down on the number of weekends trips that we can take in a July, but that's ok.

Me again. I’m hoping my kid will find a part-time job once they get to college. (And they are, too.) I think it will be easier to fit in then than it’s ever been during the high school years.

It makes no sense if you are that wealthy to work school year when school is their job. Cut back travel.

Yes - my kid is a camp counselor and they just let them know which weeks that could be there for.

Why don't you stop giving her money?

DP and I posted early how both of my kids have jobs and put their availability in the apps. Neither needed to work. They wanted to and enjoyed having their own spending money that they made on their own. They take pride in that. Yes, we still give them money because they don’t make that much.

One is going to college this fall and he won’t work right away, I don’t think, but I suspect he will work soon after. He doesn’t need to but has been applying to jobs since he was 15 because he wanted to, not because he had to.

My DD(17) did not pursue getting a job this summer. We are gone for two weeks in July plus she has a one week volunteer commitment right before vacation. She is however babysitting for some neighbors for set times every week we are in town.

They lifeguards at your community pool that takes everyone because they know kids come and go on vacation, esp after swim team ends, plus lots leave at varying times in August to go to college. The local pools are a great first job.

Agree that life guarding seems to be super flexible and they hire tons of kids at our pool. Not all teens are cut out to be lifeguards, though.

If my summers had been interesting and fully funded without my getting a job, I may have also refused. But my parents were not like that and I would have been bored out of mind and broke otherwise. This is on you, not your kid.

You clearly think this it is a flex to repeat that your kids don't need to work. Maybe chill on the noblesse oblige.
