Is our dog going to forget us?

Mine does. I left town for a month while DH took care of our dog. When I got back, he was SUPER excited to see me until he realized he was supposed to be mad, then ignored me, pretended he couldn’t hear me, and pooped in my area.

I dog-sit and your dog absolutely won't forget you for two weeks. In my experience, dogs get a little depressed after the two week mark because they miss their people, but after a day or 1.5 days, they rally. I've never had people stay away longer than three weeks. And they will be THRILLED when you come home. I've even told dogs when their people have landed at the airport and are on their way home and the dogs understand and start getting excited.

Sigh.

He'll be delighted to see you when you come back, even if he has fun while you're away. Now maybe brush up on dogs' needs and behaviors.

Would you say this to new parents who are learning as they go? Troll. Get a life.

PP you replied to. I stand by what I said. Parents and pet owners should all educate themselves before becoming parents or pet owners. I'm an animal biologist, I care deeply about doing the research before committing oneself to lifelong caregiving of a dependent. I've fostered dogs for years, and placed many puppies for adoption. Some people think nothing of treating a puppy like a random accessory. I always give preference to families who have done their due diligence.

It sure doesn’t sound like the OP is treating her beloved “sweet boy” like an accessory. Someone who takes the time to post something like this certainly cares about their pet.

This. Seems they even researched enough to know to do a trial run at the boarding facility. PP just sucks and is sanctimonious. I stand by what I said.

My cats remember the kids and they are gone for months at a time. These cats don’t abide strangers and greet the kids without fail. They know the sound of their steps on the stairs still.

We had a cat that was definitely pissed off that we "abandoned" him.

As a child, my family took lengthy (several week) vacations, leaving our dog with my grandparents where it was loved and well taken care of. My dog never forgot us, but she did hold a grudge for a day or so.

He will be boarded at a place he’s visited and enjoyed in the past during daycare trials, so I know he is in good hands, but I can’t stop worrying that he will hold a grudge or worse, forget us completely. I also realize this is irrational! Please give it to me straight!

Dog will totally remember you.
I don't think dogs have a sense of time like we do, I don't think they are super aware of a difference between 10 days and 6 hours, but dog is likely to be more excited to see you when you get back than when you get home from a grocery store run.

Do you have actual children or are you projecting those emotions into your pet?

No. Dog will be happy to see you. Cat would trip you at the top of the stairs to teach you a lesson.

Have cats. Can confirm.

My dogs were looked after wonderfully by my vets office and they honestly seemed almost annoyed to leave. They let them sit up front in the office and greet people. They were tiny so it worked.
