6th grader is the common last formal birthday parties planned by parents in dmv area? Does anyone ever throw venue birthday party for middle schooler boys?

My oldest aged out of birthday parties around 6th grade. My youngest is 16 and he still has friends over for his birthday. We have a pool and he’s a summer birthday so that may factor into it.

Op here. Well, we brought pizza, drinks & goodies bags to daycare for the whole class and teachers when he was age 2 to age 5. Our family live nearby, so we celebrate his birthday together with grandparents & uncles/aunts/cousins from both sides at 2-3 different places every year as a family only event.

If I do not have family live so nearby, we probably would have thrown birthday parties with friends for him every year. It never comes to my thought that it is essential to celebrate with friends from school even thought they meet at school daily during school year.

Op here. He has winter birthday, so it is restricted to indoor only.

School is school, not playtime, not have fun with friends time.
I’m honestly surprised you never knew birthday parties with friends are the norm for elementary kids?
