UVA and other colleges rescinding offers

A grade of “C” merely means average. What’s wrong with being average?

You, sir, are a true gentleman.

This is also high school dependent. You need to ask your school counselor for a definite answer. But Bs and Cs in general will not get the acceptance rescinded.

I know of a case where UVa rescinded an offer in June - after their final report card was received at UVa - to a FCPS student after the student got Cs and Ds senior year. Not sure if they were an ED or EA admit.

So it can happen. I agree with others that it is less common for an A/B student to fall apart like that senior year.

Maybe colleges vary.

My own ED offer was clear that it was conditional on final grades for senior year being roughly the same.

The only problem is that C is below if not way below average in today’s world. And UVA isn’t a school for average students.

Service Academies will rescind for a D in a core subject.

UVA won’t, but we’ve seen it happen at Ivies (per our HS counselor).

He's now thinking if he just gets in somewhere he can cruise through senior year.

Assuming this is true, do colleges actually rescind offers after a senior year with Bs and Cs or is this just urban legend?

They do not.
But.
That is no way to prepare for the intensity of college especially a top one such as UVA.
Just as doing well freshman-Junior year is important for getting into college, once in college the first two to three are very important for internships and many other opportunities

A- is the average grade in most high schools across virginia and the rest of the US. A C is near the very bottom.
Even in college a C is now bottom 10-25% depending on the institution

They (ivy included) are not going to rescind an offer over a few Bs and Cs. I have never heard of that happening, even at high schools with serious grade inflation. The worst case is probably that they put some limit on how many credits your DC can take freshman year. And honestly, that may not be a bad thing.

Maybe it’s different at a place like Thomas Jefferson, but students who have to work hard to get a mix of mostly A’s and B’s in most classes at a normal high school might not be smart enough to be a great fit at UVa.

Two of my kids went to UVA. We’re prestigious.

Or they just say, “Drop and give me twenty!”
