| If you’re worried about mental health, you should never have allowed your junior to take 6 APs. |

Similar situation here, OP so I feel for you. My junior’s classes are pretty much done, but it’s been about one month of exams, plus projects leading up to those exams for DC. She’s been pretty stressed. And throw in an SOL last week too.
The AP teachers gave final exams prior to the AP exam. The DE classes gave finals at the same time. What we did to lessen the stress - opted out of the SOL (has score from another test), skipped an AP exam, and stayed home some days. The classes are done, no new content, and she can get dedicated time on some of her remaining projects/assignments. She asked for a project extension in one class too due to the APs |
And the AP classes are not doing tests, finals or learning anything these two week since half of the kids or more are missing due to AP exams, or leaving school after their tests. |
The real issue is that FCPS has this stupid calendar that keeps kids in school through June. Other states end with the AP exams. |
New poster but a lot of schools let you miss the other half of the day when you have an AP exam. Ours does. Of course if my kid had something important in another class he’d have gone but he did not. |
| Because the teachers are also burned out and don’t wanna work 1 milisecond after the last day of school to get their grades in, And no one holds them accountable. |
Yes, teachers are burned out. Have you tried the job? The phrase "teacher tired" exists for a reason. Teachers have to get grades in ASAP. Seniors need final transcripts for college, etc. There's a ton of accountability placed on teachers at the end of a year, considerably more than you're likely aware of. Not every thread needs to become a dig at teachers. |
DP but that’s actually pretty normal for many students. Not all AP classes are hard. Everyone is on a different track, not sure why you feel the need to judge. |
All year long parents ask for grades to be done to policy, but we are supposed to believe that there’s accountability for this at the end of the year? |
I agree they should pause testing the week of AP exams. DC may be able to ask the other teachers to move their test to the following week. I find most teachers are flexible and kind if asked. |
6 APs really isn’t much of a flex. |
AP classes are not giving finals diring AP testing, because half or more of the class is missing to take other AP subject tests. The test schedule is national, set by college board, not school specific set by some random teacher in FCPS. There is zero chance that what OP is claiming is real. If her kid is taking 6 AP exams, none of those classes will be doing anything substantive the 2 weeks of AP exams, and certainly not a class test or final exam. Many, if not most, AP classes give their final exam the week leading into the test, structured like the AP exam the students are going to take in May. The final serves as a practice test for the AP exams. All the material for the class is finished the last week in April, so the final occurs prior to testing, not during testing. And as others have stated, nearly all AP classes and certainly any AP classes an 11th grader is taking, will have a large cohort of seniors. Graduations begin the week after Memorial Day, so Senior grades need to be in by the end of May. |
There is zero chance an AP teacher is giving class finals during the AP exam weeks. Half her students will not be in class. The students are taking other AP exams for other classes. |
That’s true but in DCs case she had a poster due last week for an AP class, just prior to that class’ AP exam. With the other AP exams last week, drawing a poster during this period was kind of stressful for her. |
My sophomore had an in class writing summative the week before the AP exam. Unfortunately they just cannot stop for everything. The teacher did give a study period the class before the exam which was nice. |
