My DS started working at a local boarding kennel when he turned 16. He likes animals, dogs in particular. He also is an ADHD kid and it keeps him moving since he is walking dogs, cleaning up, etc throughout the day.
He's still working there PT while taking community college courses now at 19. |
| Diners. Mom and Pop type diners that are open for breakfast/lunch, don’t serve alcohol, and are more greasy spoon/low brow will hire 16 for servers. She will be very busy and moving constantly. While tips are small (menu is cheaper) you turn over tables very quickly and it adds up. |

My 13yo is currently refereeing soccer games. Its not really a summer job. Its seasonal but shes making $20-$40 per game depending on the league. She does 2 games in a Saturday and makes $40-$80 for that.
The certification wasnt too hard. Approx 5 hours online and 5 hours in person. Also has ADHD but loves soccer. |
| I wish we had diners in MoCo!! As if! |
Tastee diner in Bethesda is an old school diner! |
| Have her continue to lifeguard. It pays the highest especially if you go county or city of rockville. |
+1 DS was a camp counselor for a couple summers and prior to that was a volunteer CIT. We were lucky that his favorite camp didn't charge for CIT, just didn't pay them. DD was a counselor at a sleepaway camp and had to do a few weeks one summer as a trainee first where she was a volunteer. |

| It's not that many hours, but our 14 yo has had some success mowing lawns and doing other yardwork for neighbors. |
Whoa, is this a chain or a local spot? My kid would love to work at a boarding kennel one day (also a kid with ADHD who loves, loves, and I mean LOVES, dogs.) |

DD is 16 this summer and this is her first real job. I started applying with her for jobs in early February. We applied to a few private schools as a counselor, but didn't hear back. Guess they want to hire within??? So we applied to some local golf courses (consessions) and our local county as counselors, and also never heard back. HoCo and MoCo have summer employment help for teens. The deadlines are March-ish. We applied to the HoCo one. They said they had over 1,500 applications for an unknown # of slots. We had an interview with the point person back in early April and still haven't heard anything. It's tough out there.
So we applied to our local YMCA camp as a counselor and got the job. YAY! But it definitely took lots of "hey, what's my status?" emails. I think we were open to everything. I looked at Starbucks, Target, etc., as well. I think my child's friends are cart collectors at the local grocery store. |

| OP here. It is tough out there. Teens are competing with 20-somethings and in some cases, older adults, for jobs. I’m hearing that from many corners, which is why I’m gathering a list now. I’ll have a better idea where to start come December. |
Yep and in many (most?) cases teens are not hired. |
| DD made bank last summer at 15 babysitting. Pays way better than all the the w2 jobs as far as spending money |
