Which of these do YOU think has best undergrad academics and campus culture: Northwestern, Chicago, Duke, Penn, Rice

I attended Rice in the 80s. Fantastic experience. Loved the residential colleges. Even better resources today! The grade inflation comment, if true, is wildly different than in the 80s. If you don't know anything about Houston, read Prophetic City by S. Klineberg.

We visited 4/5 of these schools. It really depends on the student and what they are interested in. And the vibe that works. These are all great schools.

I mysteriously have a brainiac who is also a great athlete. Recruited by a bunch of schools, but chose the brainiac path. Not a partier, but very social and likes a sense of community.

So in that world it was Rice by a mile. Followed by Penn, Northwestern, and Chicago. Didn't visit Duke, so no opinion. STEM kid so that makes a difference.

Chicago has the best academics and Duke has the best campus culture. Penn is kind of a mix of the two. Northwestern and Rice are full of snowflakes.

Oh that’s funny because I also have a brainiac athlete in stem who chose northwestern! But I think she had ruled out Texas due to reproductive rights issues so didn’t really look much at Rice.

I agree that they all all great schools but have very different vibes so the person who likes Penn might not like rice might not like NU.

Because of grade inflation?

because of premed and prelaw advising

Do you seriously think Penn and Northwestern do not have top notch premed / prelaw advising?

their match rates are not as high

The difference is minimal. A strong student never needs to worry about that.

Thanks for demonstrating why I didn't say Chicago, Duke, or Penn.

Agree it’s all about fit.
What an idiotic post.

Thanks for demonstrating why the snowflake moniker is accurate

This is all about fit for sure. DS had all these options minus Rice and chose Chicago. It was the hardest decision of his life because every school is amazing and unique.

Probably Duke combining academics, culture and prestige.

Since I don’t like cold or super hot weather, I’d go with Penn and Duke.

Agree that each school will speak to different kinds of students. "undergrad academics" will be great at all of them; "campus culture" can manifest in different ways.

Rice was the only one listed that spoke to my kid, because of the convivial "friendly nerd" vibes there. She was only waitlisted, but ended up at a school with a similarly kind-and-academicky student body. Other students would find more of what they're looking for at the other schools.

Duke and I hate Duke.

where did your kid end up? Rice is one of my kids reaches and would love to find something he likes as much that is more of a sure thing

You can't go wrong with any of these colleges. I would recommend attending weekend programs for accepted students to make an informed choice.

If you really want to have a new experience for personal growth, get out and try something different than where you grew up. If there are direct flights, visiting home shouldn't be an issue.
