Applying to HGCs

Anyone have any thoughts on what types of "personalities" might fit in best in these Centers? Way back when I was in elementary school the programs had a reputation for being a refuge for really smart kids who had issues fitting in socially at school. Does anyone know if this is this still the case?

I'm the parent of a HGC student who is now in college. In my DS's class, there was a complete range of social types - social butterflies, bookworms, nerds, jocks - pretty much mirrored the classes he'd come from in his neighborhood elementary. What they all had in common was that they were so far ahead of the regular curriculum that their needs couldn't be met in their neighborhood schools. And what was wonderful about the HGC was that all these different types got along, made friends, and supported each other because in that environment it was cool to be smart.
