Is it normal for parents to not let kids play sports because of cost of medical bills?

Anonymous
Lots of people won't let their kids play tackle football because of the risks of serious brain damage...but not because of the immediate healthcare costs from everyday injuries.

However, the short answer to your question...is No, it's not normal.

And most doctors suck at treating sports injuries and just tells the patient to give up. Is this fear common among parents?

I thought your schtick was that your parents didn't know about sports so they never exposed them to you and now you are living with regret... this is a new angle for you.

Well spotted.

He's comically easy to spot.

Holidays with his family must be a lot of fun.

We were very lucky, not once in their actual sports.

I had a number of serious sports injuries and coached gymnastics, and this concern never crossed my mind.

I wish I had your genes. I got injured just from causal jogging

Welll, that's what I am saying
Pickup basketball - two different broken bone incidents, lacrosse stick to the mouth and a broken tooth at lunch time, no contact dislocated knee out of nowhere!

Never in practice or competition for the organized sports. But knowing that it could happen didn't keep me from signing them up!

DS played sports year round and only injury that cost us more than a copay was a concussion. Very mild in the end but got a scan of his head.

Most expensive injury was when he was playing with friends and slipped and broke his wrist and required surgery.

Where are you getting that doctors tell the patients to give up? I've had 2 major sports injuries in my life and had great care from doctors. My friends' kids have had various injuries and none have experienced the "just give up" mentality.

You can still screw up your joints from tennis, basketball, and baseball

My long term injury is from rowing.

We just spend about $700 for an MRI and PT for my softball-playing DHs elbow sprain. But I’m still letting her play. I’ve routinely injured myself as a runner. If you do anything athletic outside you run the risk of injury.

Maybe I was weak, but I was 6’0” in high school.

That's not really remarkable. Too short for basketball and volleyball and not enough muscle mass for any other sport.
