UVA- how hard is it to get classes you need/want?

In all fairness, UVa *requires* that students in A&S graduate in 4-years. Extensions are exceptions and granted rarely (an example of a potential exception is if student is hospitalized for many weeks with a serious illness - which often also implies withdrawing from university courses for that hospitalization semester). Programs other than A&S do not have the same 4-yr limit, but all of the other UVa programs are much smaller in size.

Well they also take a ridiculous amount of AP high school courses for credit. These are not equivalent to actual college level courses. The top universities- most T10/Ivy/20s offer very little credit (or none) for HS coursework, it dilutes the brand. It’s not just about $.

It is a public school. Every single public university takes a large number of AP courses for credit. This includes UCLA, Cal, Michigan, UNC, UVA, etc., but I suspect you knew that. UVA haters gotta hate.

Also, most of the T20 does too. There is a minority of these schools that don’t, but it certainly is not all of them.

Doubt it. AI sucks at Excel math and formatting PowerPoints well, the two primary tasks of analysts.

So more than half the entire class wants business? My DC has turned down many direct admit business schools for UVA. He is really confident about getting in, but I am very, very nervous. I imagine the spots are evenly split by gender. By the time you find out it in June it is too late to transfer to another university. I really wish UVA was direct admit and that they expanded the commerce school so more kids can get in.

Lots of kids just end up studying economics if they don't get in or he could send in the transfer apps in March in case he doesn't get in. Last year the Commerce acceptance rate for kids with a 4.0 their first year was 85%. With a 3.97 (so a single A minus) it dropped down to about 60%. These results are on Reddit as someone filled out the paperwork to get the exact stats from UVA.

This year (25-26) 1525 freshmen took the pre-commerce class that is required to apply. They will take a class of 350. So if all apply that's about a 21% admit rate but not all will apply. My kid is one who's decided against it.

UVA shoiuld publish these stats so kids can make an informed decision about attending the school. I assume getting into the Data Science school and Batton school for Policy are also difficult but maybe not as bad as the commerce school?

If kids need 4.0 or 3.97 to get into Commerce school, then is the intro Econ class a weed out class? What is the grading curve? I imagine that many of the 1500 kids who take the prerequisite classes won't get an A?

Is there grade deflation at UVA? What about the premed classes?
