| I couldn’t find the full CNN documentary for you, but here is Gupta’s Chasing Life podcast episode about it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=J-ErmOKOm5c |
You may want to poke around here: https://forums.apoe4.info/ You need to use discernment because there are some people who are under the spell of a grifter and a lot of posts relate to that, but there is also a lot of helpful information. Please ignore the people who say "there is nothing you can do." While it is true that medications are limited, there are many QOL focused management strategies that can have a very positive impact. I agree that most neurologists aren't very helpful beyond diagnosis and looking to geriatric psychologists, social workers etc. is what you want to be doing. |
| Talk to pcp about seeing a geriatric psychiatrist. There isn’t much anyone can do, except prescribe meds in the event you are moving her to new situation or some other temporary transition. |
Different poster. There IS NOTHING you can do unless the person has the self-awareness to know there is an issue and the motivation to do the Gupta stuff. Most of that is better done in advance when you know you have a family history. Many with dementia do not really understand they have an issue or are in denial. Good luck getting those parents to exercise daily, lift weights, eat only whole foods, engage in socially stimulating activity with peers where they have to behave and use social skills, etc. The research is interesting and I do think it makes sense that all those things help, but if you parent doesn't want to do all, the.things you have to figure out your limit. There are brain exercises too, but that is also better done before it's full blown and it's a PITA for someone who doesn't even think he or she has a problem. Anosognosia is the term for those who have no clue they have dementia. Good luck convincing them to make a lifestyle change when they think they still have a job and are raising kids! |
Well, you don't try to make them remember or do things for the reason you want them to do them, you use therapeutic lies. Depending on stage that may or may not be helpful. As I said there is a lot of junk on that forum but some worthwhile reading as well for people with APOE4. There's also the notion for everyone that he only thing you can do is medicate people into oblivion which is dinosaur thinking. Dementia pf any kind is a tough dianosis but it can be so much better than it used to be. |
