WWYD?!? Big Box Disappointment (Kitchen)

I would state the facts to the BB store. I would list everything that needed to be done and fixed in order for the kitchen to be as you ordered. I would also provide the additional costs you incurred. After you lay out the facts, I would say: “This needs to be rectified. How will you make things right?”

If their answer is acceptable, take it. If not, escalate.

I’m real sorry you’re going through this. I know how stressful it is. Every job we’ve had done has had its challenges. You’ll work through them and it will work out. In the end, you’ll enjoy your kitchen and it will be a “fun” story and life lesson.

Thank you I appreciate your feedback

This is why you don’t get installers from Lowes or Home Depot. They subcontract work to the lowest bidder and often delay resolution to issues by claiming dispute is with a 3rd party.

This was fault of BBs kitchen designer’s measurements and design.

Same. But we waited while they reordered new cabinets to fit properly rather than change anything else. It cost us in delay but we got what we wanted.

This is good advice. I have done many gut renovations and no matter how well I plan there is always something. You will love your kitchen once it is done!

You can demand whatever you want but at the end of the day it will come down to what you get or are willing to sue over, and if you are going to sue, what you will actually win.

Stuff happens.

This. The bb store's designer may not have been a kitchen pro. The contractor was whomever took the bid.

TL;DR — We’re now on issue #3.

The replacement cabinet came in and doesn’t match the depth, so everything is misaligned again. On top of that:
- Original design (their measurements) caused the door interference issue
- Their “fix” forced us to move a window out of pocket
- Replacement was delayed despite being told it was ordered
- Cabinets don’t match the original finish (no signed approval)

We have a meeting this week, but months later we still don’t have a functional kitchen and costs keep adding up. Looking into next steps if this isn’t resolved.

Also, we have already gathered all documentation needed to initiate chargeback quickly. We have also spoken with a couple lawyers and are meeting with a consumer plaintiff attorney in the next couple days. Extending any grace initially to a large corporation was our mistake here.

The store did the measurements!

Why on earth wouldn't you have your contractor confirm the measurements????

I have a friend who was a "kitchen designer" at Home Depot. She was a year out of college with a degree in political science. Literally no design or contracting experience whatsoever. Anyone can call themselves a kitchen designer at one of these stores.

Your mistake was moving the window instead of just asking them to redesign the kitchen and reorder the cabinets.

I'm sorry, OP. I was quoted about 12 weeks start to finish for my kitchen and it took 9 months, and instead of costing 100k it cost 130k. At some point, it is what it is. These things rarely go smoothly. Although, they should be paying for their mistakes as they go, not having you pay for them. Some costs just end up being higher- for example, my reno ended up needing lead and asbestos abatement that wasn't anticiapted, and then a wall couldn't be moved the way they wanted it to be moved because they didn't realize a structural beam was in the wall. Should they have known that ahead of time? Probably. Should they have anticipated the need for lead/asbestos abatement prior to tearing things up considering our house is 120 years old? Probably. Is it realistic that I was going to take them to court over these things? No. But, when they ordered the wrong sized windows, they just said "the windows came in the wrong size- we are so sorry- new ones will be here in 2 weeks" and I didn't see a bill. Same thing for when one of the cabinets got damaged during install- they had to order a new one, and it delayed things, but I didn't see a bill. And if they'd tried to bill me I'd have refused. Basically, pick your battles. There is a reason everyone says home renovations are a nightmare- because they are! But then you're done and you forget about the terrible process after a few months and you just love your new space.

Not sure who is to blame for depth, did the designer submit wrong measurements or did cabinet manufacturer make mistake, but that is unacceptable. What the problem with the finish? Are they different shades of white or different types of wood?

This is gone on too long. It is good you’re escalating and when you meet, make them make it right.

Curious, how was the contract written in regards to payment? I would not be paying any scheduled payment if the work wasn’t completed as written. I would also not accept any increase in price over original contract amount.

Sorry you’re going through this nightmare. This is not your fault.
