Should I look to get out of DC?

Yes, you should look elsewhere. Tbh DC is so transient that your friend will probably start leaving soon anyway (grad school, marriage, kids, etc). Look at the plus side - you will always have people in interesting places to visit!

I stayed. I like it here but it’s hard to be far from family. Rising costs don’t help at all. It was relatively cheap in this area at one point.

Before 9/11 it was a great sleepy town with some big city amenities.

I've been here for over 3 years and have no friends or romantic prospects.

You have both?

Please tell me your secrets.

If you follow the jobs reports, from BLS to ADP, nationally, jobs are in the toilet. The US is literally hemorrhaging jobs. It is bad everywhere, minus healthcare industry.

If you want job growth you need to move to areas of the country that are experiencing positive migration. TX and FL for example.

At 29 (if you at all are considering future marriage/kid) I'd do a quick search for best cities to find single men or single women (dependng on what you're looking for) and best cities to find a job now and let that help guide you. Exciting things await.
