Difficult teacher at our school, but it was a great class. DD really liked the reading material (appreciated the focus on non-fiction) and the different types of writing assignments. Learned a ton, including how to produce tighter, more concise writing.
Also was happy to be in a smaller class with kids who (mostly) wanted to be there after years of gen pop English. (Our school does not offers honors English - just regular and then AP Lang and Lit - one junior and one senior year.) |
Um, what do you mean by “all the books?” My teen is in AP land and they have read zero! They did have to pick two from a list, but neither have been read yet. This is not at all what I was expecting or the experience I had in AP lang. |
She's read about 4 this year already! |
| My DD hates reading but is very diligent about assigned school work. She got an A in the class as a junior and a 4 on the exam. |

It’s probably easy compared to International Baccalaureate English. We all know AP English is just rote memorization and kids are not capable of CRITICAL THINKING, ANALYSIS and SYNTHESIS.
You have to do IB Diploma if you want to learn how to write, the others classes are worthless, or at least one league below. |
| My senior took it last year and did really well. He enjoyed it. He is an IEP student so we pick his courses carefully. The school told us there would be no supports for him so we tried to talk him out of it, but he really wanted to take it. In the end, it was the right decision as he loved his teacher, earned an A and a 4 on the exam. It was a lot of work but he thought it was worth it. I’d let your child decide, especially if they typically get As in honors. They can alway drop down if it seems too stressful. My senior did that in two other subjects over the years. |
This is sarcastic, right? Critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis all existed before, and continue to exist independently of, the IBDP. |
| My son -- who is completely a math guy, has mild dyslexia, and doesn't like reading -- was surprised by how much he liked AP Lang. He did have a terrific teacher but it also wasn't as hard as he thought it would be. I'd recommend registering for it and can always change if needed after a few weeks. |
I’m puzzled as to why the IB Diploma is so overrated in this country. Where I grew up, some schools have the IB curriculum and it’s supposed to be a dumbed down version compared to the standard curriculum. The IB teachers are just regular high school teachers. How good can they be?? |
In IBD you write a 4000 word essay. How much writing is in AP Lang? It’s not even comparable. |
My son took IB English last year and the teacher was incompetent. This year, his teacher in AP English is a HYPS English Ph.D. and it’s night and day! |
Its not just memorization. |
| Not hard |
That's teacher-specific and school/school system-specific. In regular 10th-grade English, my kid was doing research papers. In AP, noth much. |
I hate to break this to you, but just because you’re required to write a longgggg essay doesn’t mean you’re trained to write better! |
