I was coming here to say this. My son went to Carleton and many of his classmates had also cross applied to Rice and/or had siblings there.

Doesn’t check all the boxes but seems to appeal to many of the same sorts of kids.

For mid-size R1s:
• Brown
• Tufts
• William & Mary
• WashU
• Yale

Somewhat-similar LACs to take a look at (though I think the R1s above are better fits): Carleton, Haverford.

Would strongly recommend Rice in the ED round, if finances aren't a factor.

This is a.great list. I'm a new poster with a kid at Rice who applied to all of the bolded schools.

Nah. These are excellent schools but not "similar to Rice".

OP said near a major city. It’s not clear from the post how near or how major. It’s hard to find “twin” institutions, so presumably the applicant will identify the trade-offs they’re willing to make.

Colorado College would be an excellent option. Close to city. Skiing nearby. Collaborative peers.

This analysis placed Rice 16th nationally by selectivity:

Agree with Yale and WashU. Not Northwestern. UChicago seems to meet all of OPs requirements.

Tangent (sorry) — what is the vibe at WashU? I had thought it was a little preppier or frattier — is that not the case?

You can be in the Twin Cities in 30 minutes.

To parents whose kids are already in Rice.

Could you please share your thoughts on 1)Residential Schools
2) Learning environment
3) Dorms

DD got in from WA and appreciate your feedback.
