How is South Lakes High School?

Westfield is a revenue sport school. The country club sports at Westfield are average at best. Football, basketball, wrestling are up there with the best.

South Lakes isn't really good at "country club sports," either. Their main success recently has been boys' basketball, but they've ceded that to Westfield (hopefully) this year, now that Jordan Scott is at Michigan State.

Anyway, I don't think most decide between South Lakes or Westfield based on sports, either which teams are most successful or which teams are easiest to make.

This is OP. There are 2 houses on the market that are in our budget. One is in Westfield boundary and one in South Lakes. There is a possibility of a completely different school after the boundary changes. For now we want to know how Westfield and SL schools are. I've heard Chantilly is better than both but the current housing market is not great to be a chooser.

They are comparable schools. Students transfer between the schools for AP or IB. I suspect a lot of the Skyview population is from Westfield and South Lakes. Neither school is problematic but neither is viewed as great. Your kids can do well at either but neither has a cohort that produces a lot of NMSF or commended NMS. Kids go to good schools but not many apply for and are accepted to great colleges.Solid but not great HS experiences and outcomes.

Many families don’t want to leave Chantilly for Skyview. Centreville families don’t seem excited to be moved to Westfield. Westfield and South Lakes have populations excited to be moving to Skyview. I think if there had been full sports in the first year at Skyview, more families from Westfield and South Lakes would have been excited to move and Chantilly and Centreville families would still not be excited.

If you are chsing between Westfield and South Lakes you are choosing between IB and AP. If you are looking at Floris ES to SLHS, then look at opting into Skyview. If you are looking at Coates/McNair to Westfield then look at opting into Skyview. Those are three ES that many people believe will end up at Skyview.

Are there any options at FCPS to switch schools unless it's something like TJ? If a child's address is within SL boundary but the child wants to attend Chantilly High for AP, is that even a possibility?

Or is there a way to take AP courses separately by being at the assigned school?

You can pupil place for AP but you are assigned a school that has AP, that has space, and is closest to your house. Most SLHS students pupil placing for AP end up at Herndon HS. That may shift to Skyview but we don’t know.

AP classes are offered online but I am told that there is only one class meeting a week and the rest is asynch. My kid doesn’t have experience with it.
