GMU

Disagree.

I graduated from a grad program 3 years ago. GMU very much has an ugly campus commuter school vibe.

It’s a very good school. We looked at it, but my kid needs a smaller environment and for some classes/specialities, you don’t have a lot of contact with the actual professor. When we asked about it, my kid was advised to “make an appointment to meet with their professor once a month”. For my kid’s focus area the classes would have been good sized, but not for the big surveys. If your kid would be good at managing themselves and ticking off the survey/core class boxes, it’s good.

OP is asking about undergrad, not grad. Big difference. My DD went to Mason undergrad and lived in the dorms, which are required for freshman. She had a great four years. I was on campus a lot with her. The campus is green and lovely, fountains, etc. the facilities are new abd state-of-the-art. It doesn’t have an “ugly commuter school vibe”.

Very good school for many programs, but still seen as a commuter school to many.

Son is somewhat recent graduate within College of Science and lived on campus or nearby apartment for his 4 years although we are about 30 minutes from campus. Had several solid internships and landed starting salary of $125k right out of school. He is now partway through part-time masters there as well. He has found the professors in his program to be very accessible and supportive, he did research for one and another assisted in helping him get his first internship.

Frankly, I think GMU is seriously underrated in the rankings. It has many excellent programs and is located in a fantastic area for internships, etc.

He wants a Physics major…

Looking for honest inputs for GMU.

VA Tech already released its RD decisions, was he waitlisted?

Highly recommend the next Spotlight Day for admitted students! You’ll get more accurate and current information than on this board. We went yesterday and had a much better sense of pros and cons for my Engineering student. To be sure, lots of pros.

No, not until mid-March.

Then they are old and ignorant. Carnegie reclassified GMU to "primarily residential" in 2011. https://www.insidenova.com/news/fairfax/changes-at-gmu-lead-to-designation-as-primarily-residential-institution/article_5acea37e-98d7-5091-9796-90f3ac439160.html

VT released RD on 2/13. Both that and the EA release on 1/23 were earlier than expected this year.

dp.. it may have this designation but for some reason, so many kids go home on the weekends.

DC was considering it because they have the niche major they were looking for. We are oos but they gave DC a ton of merit aid that made it very close to in state. But, when we did the tour, DC didn't like the campus, and we heard that a lot of kids do go home for the weekend. Still, this was DC's #2 choice because of the program. DC ended up at their #1 choice.

Yes, but perception is reality. As I said, “still seen as a commuter school to many.” Not claiming as fact, but as an opinion many still hold.

+1. The campus is very green and has modern buildings. Not sure what that PP is talking about.

Agree. My kids refuse to consider it because they could walk there from home, but it’s a great school.
