Why do Disney vacationers seem uniquely subjected to social vitriol?

Yet comparable judgments are rarely, if ever, leveled at enthusiasts of other vacations: no one derides someone for frequenting Vegas, summering at the beach, touring Europe annually, or relaxing in Hawaii.

Disney visitors aren’t imposing on anyone financially, socially, or logistically—they aren’t asking anyone to fund their trip, accompany them, or manage their home in their absence. So why does this particular leisure choice provoke such disproportionate judgment, moral superiority, and indignation?

Because Hawaii, Europe and Vegas are not intrinsically thought of/designed to be kid centric destinations.

In contrast when you’re stuck waiting with your toddler in a long line behind large groups of child free adults to ride dumbo or it’s a small world it’s honestly pretty off putting….akin to a group of adults monopolizing the swing set at a local city park.

I mean, make up your mind. Is it “kid-centric” or is it overcrowded with adults? Which is it?

I think people think it is weird when Disney, which is mainly sold to children, is an overwhelming part of an adults personality.

Both things can be true…It’s a place that was designed to be kid centric which is now increasingly sullied by socially stunted adults.

Akin to when a group of teenagers decide to start hanging out at and effectively take over a playground intended for young kids. Not sure what is so difficult about this to understand.

It’s not like ALL of Disney is weird for adults but th “Disney adults” tend to want to do all the little kid stuff vs focusing on the more adult oriented options like at normal amusement parks.

The Disney bounding and dressing up is a form of stunted adulthood.

If you want a comparison, it’s more like the comic con people. Except those are meant for adults.

Disney Adults doesn’t encompass every adult who enjoys traveling to Disney without children. It’s the weird subset of people who make it their entire personality and behave in a puerile way in the parks. If you wear something Disney every day, have difficulty talking about other topics, and expect others to know all the insider Disney lingo, it’s weird. If you conduct yourself like an actual child in the parks and interfere with actual kids experience, it’s weird.

As a former Disney employee, the people that were hardest to deal with were the collector types. They'd be aggressive about certain merchandise and pins, and Disney would play into this with releasing pins only on our trading lanyards or doing these blind box things. As long as you treat others in the park and employees well, honestly, whatever.

I think part of it is because they seem a bit cheesy, corny, immature and that makes it easy to pick fun at them. I don't really have a problem with Disney adults except for the ones who are obsessed with meeting the characters. That I don't really understand. They know they aren't real so I don't see why they want to wait 45 min to get a picture with Cinderella.

My family is anti-Disney. It is fake and atrocious. I do judge anyone over 30 going to Disney and running around in Disney purses, ears and gear. Like gtfu! It is ridiculous and screams of mental illness.

I think if you took away all their photos and social media the luster would be gone for them. They seem to want to be this way for online bragging rights?

It would be an amazing social experiment to black box anyone having an experience. You get to have the experience, but no recording. Still happy?

I'm a huge animal lover and really enjoy Animal Kingdom. The zoo employees are incredibly knowledgeable and are always delighted to talk to people who have a genuine interest in zoology and conservation.

They should separate from Disney and be a national zoological center for research and study as well as a zoo.

This is actually the only good argument although I’m not sure how true it is expect wrt drinking at Epcot. The Disney adults I know (somehow I know a lot …) enjoy Disney for the same reasons kids do, by and large.
