FYI here is the new facility condition system they're using (not all schools are rated yet): https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/facilities/FCI/
And here's the old one: https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/facilities/kfi/ |
So without the special education population, its utilization would be is around 46%. Stellar. Send those kids to Travillah and make Dufief a halfway house for those with alcohol and drug addiction. |
Wow. That's uh, quite a response. ANYWAY. I've heard rumblings part of Washingtonian Woods may be rezoned to Dufief to help fill it. Would make sense as both neighborhoods would be going to Frost and Wootton @ Crown together. |
And hopefully not on the County Council to wield influence there, either, though, due to her running for a districted seat, she has a better chance than Karla, who is running at large. (County Council districts vote for their reps exclusively, while districted BOE positions are voted on by the entire county.) The lead time for CSES (no CIP funds until the 27-28 school year, and that would just be for planning) still affords a closure decision (vs. the capital project) pretty much any time prior. There has been a number of proposed projects later removed, not just deferred, from the CIP over the years. None of the proposed elementary projects are in the CIP until then, though a presumed project for a new Sligo Creek location would need to be added if they want to use the current facility for holding in time for Piney Branch. More likely that they send Piney Branch to Fairland to keep the schedule, delaying Highland View until Sligo Creek is ready -- a bunch of HVES kids could walk to the current SCES location anyway (and boundary changes are more likely between these two), whereas all of PBES would have to be bussed, whether the holding school is Fairland or current Sligo Creek. |
Dufief would be an easy closure—they’re 250 kids could just be divided to Stone Mill and Travilah without any disruption to MS or HS assignment. |
If they keep SSIMS and SCES open, there's no way they should pay to redo Highland View. It's like a mile from SCES one way and a mile from Montgomery Knolls the other way, and Montgomery Knolls/Pine Crest are pretty under-enrolled. Turn both MK and PC into K-5 schools, send most Highland View kids to MK, and send the rest of them to SCES. |
Dufief, Stone Mill and Travillah are all slated to go to three different MS in the new recommendation. |
Or just send them all to Fields Road to help diversify that school and get them all ready for Wootton at Crown - a little sneak peak of what’s to come. 😉 |
| Personally I think we should kick Cold Spring off CIP, close it down, and take that money to rebuild Wootton to keep Wootton on Wootton Parkway. They are already slated to goto Churchill anyways. |
And once you subtract the special ed kids, there are only about 200sh kids who are actually zoned for the school. So send 100 to Stone Mill and the other 100 to Travillah (split up the “save Dufief” Karen-ish moms evenly) and the special education kids will be zoned for another SPED program somewhere else. And voila, one less school to fund. |
There isn’t actually capacity without shenanigans |
There's more than enough space even staying entirely within the RM cluster. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/siteassets/district/departments/planning/fy2027/CIP27_Chapter4_Richard-Montgomery-Cluster.pdf |
They could close Ritchie Park and put the kids into cold spring, beall, and college gardens |

I hope they can take condition of school as a consideration for any closures, as long as it doesn’t get insanely difficult with busing. But I think a lot of elementary schools serve their walking community well so it might be hard. But if 2 are next to each other and could combine, pick the school in better shape and absorb the worse one.
With so many aging facilities in the county, they need to be strategic about this. People won’t be happy but we have a long road ahead to being in a better place. |
That took a weird turn. I was following the logic in the beginning but you lost me at halfway house… I’m not sure I want to understand that part. |
