Snow day and first day of tryouts

For instance, DD is trying out for softball and has been to a bunch of preseason “practices” so the coaches have seen her. And other kids will be known because they play for the same travel team as the coaches daughter. So the coaches know a lot about them already. That shouldn’t matter and everyone should start equally- but especially with a condensed, indoor tryout…i bet it does.

I'm going to be honest with you, the coaches have their varsity squads for softball already chosen. At least one school I'm aware of had its roster of 11 players up on GameChanger two weeks ago. That means there are maybe four or five spots, max, still available. And the freshman class is going to take those because it has at least four or five players playing at elite level travel ball including one girl who is on the USA Women's National Team. So, really, the tryouts are for JV.

At public school? This is true at our tiny private where everyone who tries out will make the team and they could take even more girls than will come play - in that case why not throw everyone you know is coming to tryouts this year into GC for communication purposes. But at a public this shocks me based my time chatting with various coaches over the years.

Yep at our FCPS high school baseball is a mix of batting cages, sprints on the track, and one day at a turf field off campus. They already know who they are putting on these teams anyway, with maybe a few minor decisions to make.

Yeah, a Loudoun County public. But softball is huge in Loudoun County. Stare Champion schools most years.

Continuing:

That said, there are the haves and have nots.

Haves include Woodgrove, Riverside, Indy, Tusky (last year’s surprise state champs).

Have nots are Park View, John Champe.

Woodgrove is the one with the WNT 15U player. Freedom has another one.

Just an update to this: This school I'm referencing above actually took seven freshmen for varsity yesterday. They leapfrogged over last year's JV team (none of whom were promoted to varsity this year). The freshmen are that good. Future state champions in Division 4, possibly as early as this year.

I’m so curious- what school is this?

I would guess Woodgrove basd on the division 4 reference, but I'm not PP.

Yeah, it's Woodgrove. It's not entirely surprising seven freshmen made it, though. I don't know whether any of the 11 varsity players returning from last year got cut to make room on the roster or if it's just a huge roster. Could be a huge roster.

Return starters should get cut to make room for better players, even if they are freshmen. That's how the system should work.

My DS is a 9th grader and he will be the best player on the varsity tennis team. He has training for tennis since the age of four, and he has a national ranking. The best player on the team last year is now a senior and DS beat him badly in the USTA tournament three times.
