If you decorate every season..

Oh my word. The Earth is on fire and people need seasonal throw-pillows. Every time I see seasonal decor for sale in the store, I picture the entire lot in the landfill. It really helps with overconsumption. Just decorate for your favorite holiday and move on.

Instead of decorating, I spend a lot of time with themed books. I just brought out our St. Patrick's Day books. The kids love to hear Irish stories, folklore and also some cheesy ones about catching leprechauns. After that, then comes the Easter books. It's become a really big tradition now.

I do this, too. We save some of the kids' handmade decorations in a box. Basically we have a few Christmas decor bins and then one for all "other holidays."

They make some additional stuff as crafts or I bring in things from the yard. Evergreens and pinecones for Christmas. In spring, it's forsythia and azalea prunings. In summer, whatever flowers are blooming. In fall, pumpkins, gourds, leaves.

We own a few seasonal books but mostly supplement from the library. This month the seasonal book side table is mostly Black history and Lunar New Year adjacent. I got a couple picture books at the library but also pulled off the regular book shelf some favorites by Black and Asian authors.

Apparently it is:
dry Jan
super bowl
black history month
Presidents day
Lunar new year
Fasting season
Cherry Blossoms
St Patrick's day
Spring
April fool's
Easter
Tax day
May day
Mothers day
Some heritage month
Some health awareness month

Seasonal decor is tacky and ugly.. Only exceptions:

- Christmas decor: tree, lighting and door wreath
- adding blankets, warmer bedsheets and functional warmer items for fall and winter and removing them for spring and summer (which could include switching heavier velvet curtains for linen ones if you want to go crazy)
- flowers/onemental greanery and vases matching the season

Beyond that, I unilaterally declare it tacky....

I had no idea that anyone did this. Wow

I forgot that seasonal scents could possibly make the cut (adapting them to the season, not blasting your house in cinnamon scent everything at the first sign of fall)

I saved all the cute art projects my kids made in preschool and elementary school. Lace glued on red hearts, little leprechaun guys with movable hands and legs, shamrock painted pot with fake gold coins, decorated cut out easter eggs, etc. I especially love the ones where the teacher gave them their school picture to incorporate into crafts. I have a few beautiful larger colored drawings for various holidays that I kept too.

I arrange them on my entryway table for:
Valentines
St Pats
Easter
Mothers Day
RWB (Jun-Aug)
Fall (Sep-Nov)
Halloween (add to Fall in Oct).

I throw in a few household decor items to make the presentation look nice. Wooden carved hearts, some stuffed bunnies and lambs plus my original easter basket from childhood, some cloth flags, a few photos from a holiday, etc.

It makes me smile every time I walk by and I can't believe I was so organized to keep these cute things from the beginning, as I am otherwise disorganized. I have some small plastic bins in the foyer closet that holds each holiday, so it's easy to swap out.

And most of it is ugly and tacky. When I see themed decor for these minor holidays, it’s just giving tacky Insta influencer vibes

This seems so forced and inauthentic. Like “Get Out” level creepy

I 'decorate' for many holidays/seasons, but other than Christmas, it really only involves throw pillows in the family room, a front door wreath and/or doormat, and a dining room tablecloth. I put away the Valentine pillows/wreath/tablecloth last week, and won't put anything else 'holiday' out until probably April (floral wreath/mat and colorful throw pillows), and those will stay until the end of June when the summer/patriotic stuff comes out.
