In our experience it makes a big difference. the kids with a mix of As and A minuses from our private school (say GPA of 3.88--my kid and similar) are never admitted, regardless of strength of extracurriculars, etc but the flat straight A, 4.0 kids are admitted on occasion. So while they say "all forms of an A are an A" in practice they ARE looking at the A minuses. college counseling told us this but we went ahead and tried (3.88 with super, super strong extra curricular profile and test scores) and college counseling was correct--our kid was outright rejected in favor of a kid with a perfect GPA. And the data supports this every year. |
At our Catholic HS an A- is 90-93. Only quarter grades use +/-. Semester grades and Final grades do not include +/-. It’s an average of the quarters and 90-100 is an A. Every HS includes a profile which details how grades are assessed, AP exam profile, test score etc. in their grade/transcript report to college. Whether honors get an 0.5 bump, what AP honors courses are available, etc. Different HSs are apples and oranges. |
that is your private and all things being equal the stronger candidate goes--but they cant compare different schools, in my kids school he is by far the strongest candidate as the EA decisions showed us, also--some schools dont even have A- |
| SCOIR only shows gpa and test score not other student’s transcript. You people have zero idea who has uw 4.0, or A- vs A, etc. |
is scoir used for the midyear report? |
From a private school kids know and they especially know of anyone has a 4.0 since this is like one kid a year max. |
