| Thanks all for the tips. Sounds like I definitely need to insure this trip. Have an elderly parents who I never know what they might throw at me so seems prudent. |
Our annual policy through Allianz. We do a lot of skiing, national parks/outdoor activities and cruises so we’re most concerned with medical and evacuation coverage. We’ve made 2 claims over the years and they were covered easily. |
| I use Tin Leg. Never had to file a major claim but recently filed a claim due to a flight delay. They reimbursed $200 (which was the cost of the policy) and got additional money from the airline. |

Take a look at MedJet annual and short-term policies for evacuation home, not to local hospital.
In my experience, having elderly parents is a great reason to get trip insurance. I used it 2x, once to cancel a trip and once to come home early. |
| Yes, we had a friend who got very sick while overseas. He was in the hospital for 3 weeks. Without trip insurance it would have bankrupt them. He needed a medical flight to get home. |
| I purchased cancel for any reason trip insurance with medical coverage for our two week trip to Europe because I got paranoid about one of us getting sick and I had heard recent horror stories about how expensive medical evacuation was. |
| Allianz is the gold standard. |
| If it’s only the rental, I’d check your credit card. A lot of travel cards offer the same protections as basic travel insurance. |
|
We do not. I put it on a credit card and use the protection they offer and we never travel at a cost higher than we can eat.
Generally, I find them difficult to collect on and not worth it. For example we once rented in the Outerbanks and it was evacuated during the middle of our stay. We were only reimbursed for the two days under evacuation order although clearly it don’t make sense to return for the two days following the evacuation. |
| I do for bigger trips, and almost always through Allianz. |
| I was surprised once when my camera was ruined in vacation (water damage, on a rafting trip) that my HOME insurance covered it! (I just had to prove that it was beyond repair) |
