I dislike fantasy but want to push my boundaries

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi is hilarious and takes place in an alternate, ancient Yemen (and some other countries in the gulf/Africa).

The heroine is a 40-something, retired pirate who gets her crew back together for one last job.

This is my recommendation too, as someone who doesn’t read fantasy—but I really enjoyed this! And the sequel is coming out soon.

I really love the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. It's character-driven and follows the illegitimate heir of a prince as he grows up and navigates royal politics. The first book is Assassin's Apprentice.

I don’t care for fantasy books either but I’m really enjoying King Sorrow by Joe Hill. I would describe it as horror/fantasy but grounded with characters in the real world.

What do you like OP?

I recently read "This is How You Lose the Time War" and recommend it. It's not a "plot rich" novel, whatever that means.

The City We Became by NK Jemisin is fantasy set in New York, and a fun read.
