At each school, find out annual numbers for rush vs. actual bids given. If 25% of kids do not get a bid, that can feel awful if it Greek is super important to a kid. No one thinks their kid will be the shut out, but it’s gotta be somebody’s kid. So you might want to get this info in advance and include it in your decision process.
Not getting a bid at a big school with options is a setback than can be mitigated by effort and options. It can feel like the end of the line and isolating at a small school. So if small school is the way to go for your kid, prepare him well with an excellent rush strategy. |

W&L does not match the OP's criterion for acceptance rate. |
OP kid won't get in. WF is very competitive |

Given OP's criteria, Sewanee is a choice. While it has a strong greek system, no way OP's child will get into W&L. The acceptance rate quite low. And absurdly low once you get to regular decision. |
| Furman |
We took a tour and got the impression that it wasn't very Greek. Didn't dive into it beyond that, so we may be wrong. |

Another vote for Sewanee. It has a great academic reputation with kind of W&L vibes without the crazy selectivity. Strong Greek system but very inclusive and laid back unlike the SEC schools.
We toured Furman a few years ago with a kid wanting Greek life and didn't like it. From what we gathered, the school kind of neutered the fraternities about 10 years ago by taking away their houses. There's still a high participation rate, but the scene isn't what it once was, and the school seemed to have a lot of rules in general, which turned kid off completely. Just our experience. |
Would these schools be worth making an exception in the OP's distance preference? As an alternative, look into Wofford. |
On our way to tour Furman, we did a drive by of Wofford. Looked very nice (to me) but it appeared very small to my son. DS has a friend at Depauw and loves it. Tried to get DS to apply but he wasn't interested. I ran the net price calculator a few months ago and thought the number for Depauw was very reasonable. |
Yes. They fit what the kid is looking for, and the drive to each is only 1.5 to 2 hours longer than the OP's preference. |
