Its charged for a max of 4 semesters. So $6400 currently. Its also charged to support these expensive and high demand majors and their many new facilities.

UVA engineering tuition is significantly more than $3200/yr over their college of arts and sciences. It's 10K more per year for all four years.

For UMD, the differential tuition occurs when your credits reach junior level standing.

So will advanced placement students pay differential tuition only for sophomore year, or for sophomore and junior year?

Only fair to charge higher tuition for people who will be paying more taxes if they stay in Maryland and when they get a job.

Lol. Typical DCUMs answer. Most people in this country don't have enough to cover less than a $1k emergency so no, they don't just have an extra $3k on top of the already high price of college.
