How many of you work after hours?

Anonymous
I used to work after hours all the time. I teleworked three days a week and would attend to emails and respond to calls before and after my official work day started. I’m a fed and now that I’m back in the office with no telework I leave my work at work. I repurposed my home office and don’t bring my computer home anymore. I don’t get nearly as much work done at the office but it’s what my leadership wants.

Yes, not much though. Never work more than 45 hours a week. I actually feel like this is pretty generous compared to a lot of companies. I think a lot of upper GS level Feds don’t realize how good they have it in terms of salary vs. hours.

Yes, constantly. In my line of work (academia), there's absolutely no divide between "work hours" and "non-work hours." Evenings, weekends, holidays are all fair game.

Yes..but more when I worked from home. Now I have to lug the laptop on the metro so I only do that when I really need the time. I used to regularly check in in the evening as I work with folks in several time zones. Fed

But you also don't really have a 9-5, do you?

Yes, lawyer. Billable hour requirements, deadlines, or just to be prepared.

Yes but it's cyclical for me. When there's a hot item that needs to make it to the finish line I'll work insane hours and weekends, but eventually that subsides for a while, and no one bothers me if I take it easy for a few weeks after.

I’m a lawyer in biglaw, so there is no “regular hours” vs “after hours”. I work biglaw hours.

You are not allowed to telework during regular tour of duty. But you are free to telework after working hours.

You mean unpaid teleworker.

No thanks.

Yes and I don’t telework. I commute daily and then come home and work more. I also work about 4hrs sunday night to prep for the week.

i think most people here are assuming salaries workers. Obviously hourly office workers should not work after hours. Salaried workers are paid to get a job done. Most salaried workers don’t have the luxury to miss deadlines .

No I’m not actually - my agency is incredibly punitive so I am not going to risk an accusation that I was teleworking impermissibly. More importantly why would I do that?

Salaried Feds don’t work after hours anymore by and large. I will only do so if I get credit hours and permission for situational telework which my boss does not allow.
