Do mammograms hurt?

I finally learned you can ask to sit down and they use a rolly chair/stool that is height adjustable. It makes it so much more comfortable for me. Still an awkward position but I don’t have the stress of worrying I’m going to pass out.

OP, this isn’t common so please don’t take this as gospel. I’ve never heard of this, ever, though I don’t doubt PP’s experience.

Key tips, for mammos and vaginal ultrasounds and any other invasive or aggressive exam:

1. Schedule during your follicular phase, ie first half of your cycle, after your period but before ovulation. That is when your pain tolerance is at its highest.

2. Take a Tylenol or favorite pain reliever 30 minutes before your exam.

I have very small, very dense breasts and by following these two tips, I've never felt anything but a very temporary squish (not even a discomfort).

What facility did you go to get the chair? I fainted at my last one after the technician said I had to do it standing up—no alternative offered.

Yes, I am usually holding back tears but everyone is different.

I wouldn't say painful but uncomfortable. The technician will literally get underneath you and move you around. I am only a 34A. I asked her if I had enough boob. I hope your appointment goes well.

This.

It’s the machine pressing on your belly.

Not really, but make sure you stretch first. I almost pinched a nerve from the angles they had me do!

People here are so dramatic.

Just get ready for the nurse to be very hands on molding you into place. I don’t think it’s that bad. How dramatic are you over shots? It’s done pretty quickly.

Wtf are you talking about? If your nerves are so sensitive, maybe you should talk to a neurologist

Its better than going to the dentist. Not enjoyable, uncomfortable, sometimes painful but over much much faster than a root canal.

They’ve gotten much less pinchy over the last few years. It’s not usually painful. The tech will be hands on getting you sandwiched and positioned. The angle can awkward and you have to hold your breath a bit. Smaller chests might hurt more.

I agree with earlier poster too, it was more bearable post breastfeeding
