Yes, you can do a lot of the research yourself - yes it takes tons of time - yes, i would still do the research even if you hire someone. It's too important a process to completely outsource to someone who will never be as vested as you are.

If you don't hire someone and the result isn't what you wanted, would your regret not hiring someone?

We hired the best essay coach for a ridiculous amount of money. After DC was rejected REA, I stepped in and we re-did a lot of the remaining application essays. Admitted to two of HYPSM. Was so glad I had kept learning. DC just went back to college and we were discussing just how little effort the coach put in. The essays were all done well ahead of time, but no contact December onwards.
