MAGA: Harvard tanks to no. 3

MAGA doesn't care about education and research, and apparently the Republicans do care anymore either.

Can't blame MAGA for that

Huh? The Trump administration is single-handedly responsible for stopping faculty research, some of it life-saving medical research, much of it ground-breaking. The US government funds research at universities because it benefits all of us -- that is how research is conducted in the US, at the universities!!

I have a good friend who is a tenured faculty member at Harvard and 3 of his 4 funding sources were eliminated by the government, and later restored, but no one dares touch them because who knows what the courts will decide.

Here is Harvard’s own publication, with factual accounting and discussion of the Harvard campus environment leading up publication in 2024:

Read what Harvard itself has to say, then decide.

I do not believe you can or should view this minor downgrade (and it is relatively minor) in a vacuum.

Harvard was the named defendant in the landmark 2023 Supreme Court decision which brought down the entire, nationwide practice of awarding college admissions on the basis of the color of Individual student’s skin:

That suit was initiated in 2014.

So much winning. America is in terminal decline. I guess it is time for our best and brightest to start considering studying abroad in China. They are taking over all rankings for best universities and research in the world.

But thank god ICE is asking for citizens' papers, we are starting multiple new wars, and the country has a whakcy brain worm leader pushing junk like sunshine and chelation therapy to treat autism.

USA, land of the dumbasses.

This is partially the fault of MAGA but it’s also a self-inflicted wound that pre-dated MAGA. This is the school that decided a plagiarist was an excellent candidate to be president, after all.

OK dude.

There are no weight classes in world powers. If we want to weight universities by populations then ETH Zurich probably beats us by a mile

Haha. Did you think eliminating affirmative action is going to let you back into the party? No affirmative action will mean more and more women and more and more Asians.

The biggest impediment to higher education in the US right now is our government.

Make America a loser?

The effect of DEI is more than demographic.

It also de-emphasizes things like math because of the embarrassing achievement gap in math.
It sacrifices specialized education for the top to better meet the needs of kids at the bottom.
It tries to equalize results frequently by limiting the top while raising the bottom.

This has widespread effects.

I think Harvard should just call it quit and close their doors while they are ahead. They will fall out of top 10 within 10 years.

The constant claims of antisemitism are getting tired. Most of us can separate Jewish people from Israel the state. But if you want to tie Jewish identity up in Israel and more specifically Israeli genocide, then yes, being anti genocide will mean being anti Jew.

You know what else has widespread effects? Russel Vought canceling science and math grants. An economy that values hedge fund employment over hard science employment. America’s best and brightest can make $15/hr as a lab tech, or $1500 hour as a finance bro. What would you do?

Harvard has boosted its Asian admits to 40%.

They were around 15%, until they temporarily boosted it to 30% to try and win the affirmative action lawsuit.

This is what happens when you prioritize mediocre rich (white) kids for the handful of slots you have open that do not go to the perfect SAT and 10 perfect AP score kids.

Harvard used to be open to LMC and MC kids that knew how to hustle and had the foundational life skills and drive to make the best use of a top degree in some field other than management consulting or finance. However, those kids don’t have daddy money, don’t play polo, can’t afford to do an unpaid desk internship in war torn Africa to look “well balanced”, don’t have legacy connections, and don’t have five figure “college consultants” on retainer to write their essays for them. And they don’t have the test scores of the Asian kids. So they don’t get in, and the US falls behind.

What does this have to do with MAGA taking over higher education?
