Some great suggestions here!

I think Harpers Ferry shouldn't be missed, but the natural side is a little more prominent than the historic side in terms of activities available. Also, I don't know how they're going to explain John Brown given the current censorship efforts.

The National Building Museum in DC is super cool and appealing for both kids and adults. That would be my top rec.

Antietam National Battlefield is not quite as far as Gettysburg but Civil War nerds rate it as better preserved, and it has its own guide program.

Frederick, Maryland has a cute historic downtown with winter boat display. Monocacy Battlefield is right outside town and has new museum exhibits.
