reclass trends and concerns

Anonymous
I know multiple boys who reclassed in middle school. We’re considering it for our 8th grade DS with a late summer birthday who is very bright but really struggles with executive functioning. He also would like to play his sport in HS and is a late bloomer, but the EF issues are by far the biggest factor weighing in favor of it. He isn’t on board at least so far, so it’s unlikely we’ll ultimately do it.

I think reclassing in HS is a lot less common. I know two boys who did it and both had very significant issues that made it necessary.

We did it for 8 to 8. Our child was small and emotionally far behind his peers in terms of maturity and physical strength. It was 100% driven by our child. It’s been great. The gift of time!

I don't know why 9th would be a problem if he doesn't mind changing schools.

I had a very tall, athletic, loquacious child... so never red-shirted but during puberty and HS it really became obvious maybe we should have.

Can you (or anyone) share what makes you think you should have redshirted?

Have a loquacious summer bday boy and redshirting is common amongst his peers. It doesn’t feel right to me, but it’s also hard to look at my still baby faced four year old and project what 14 year old him will need. He’s on the taller side of average, and D1 sports (or sports in general) are not a thing we care much about.

I have a loquacious spring bday boy with ADHD who we reclassed for 7th grade. Best parenting decision we’ve made thus far. But that also was also because he went from public to private. The focus on executive functioning has helped tremendously. And the extra year to mature has been invaluable. He has reached his full potential at his new school.

“Re-classing” is the pig’s lipstick.

I've never heard of anyone reclassing in HS. As you stated, most kids repeat 8th grade (private-to-public or public-to-private) and then move on to a HS of their choosing. I don't think you can reclass at the same school. I know someone who tried, and the school wouldn't allow them because the kid was a strong A/B student. They were doing it primarily for sports, so they decided to homeschool him for one year, and then he will re-enter the school system, most likely a private school.

It's crazy how many folks are being held back now. Back in the day, if you got held back, you were teased, and it wasn't a good thing. Now it seems common for boys to graduate from HS at 19, almost 20, which is crazy. If you were good, you played up against older guys; you didn't go down to dominate the younger kids.

Great point. It’s the new “parenting” sadly.

I transferred to a private day school from public for 11th grade, and while I stayed on-grade and even took honors classes at the private school, the admissions team warned early in the process that sometimes kids coming there from public would repeat a grade. This was 20+ years ago, but I'm not surprised it still happens now. The school was basically encouraging it.

And someone who was kicked out of Georgetown Prep, went to SJC through senior year, and then did another senior year at a military prep school before heading to UMCP. (Can you guess which public figure I’m referring to?)

Haha KP for the win. (Still struggles with exec functioning btw)

Just because you have never heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Student athletes do this. Artists too.
