HS college counseling influence on school apps

A lot of steering to Tulane (for males) and Northeastern (for everyone)!

FCPS HS (wrongly) assumes students will end up at one of the VA colleges. Counselors are not open to discuss strategy, timing strategy of applications for someplace else. Special timelines seem like a real annoyance to them.

I'm interested in various people's experiences just to hear. But yes, private and unhooked.

Love Haverford! But that is odd.

Private school, twice. First kid, did not get into schools that cc said was reaches, did get into targets. Second kid, told there was no school on list that they didn’t have a reasonable chance, got into SCEA school.

That's awesome! Congrats!

Both of my kids graduated from Madison and it also wasn’t their experience. Not much steering, including to in state options, but no discouragement either. Both of my kids wanted to go, and ended up, OOS.

Public school. Steering? List? Counselor never even met with my kid.

DD but not DS. Steered to Swarthmore, and that’s where she is.

Ugh, that sucks. But why do you think your DC was steered? Were they not considering the REA as their first choice?

Yeah, daughter was worried it would be too high of a reach and actually wanted to apply for an Ivy with ED instead. But was told too many legacies were applying to the Ivy’s and chances would be slim.
