My suggestion for a beach rental would definitely be in either La Jolla or Coronado.
These are the quietest beach neighborhoods in the area. Do not rent in the Mission Beach, Pacific Beach or Ocean Beach neighborhoods as these areas tend to be more party zones. Enjoy your stay in America’s Finest City. ✨✨ Because it truly is.

*Solana Beach Yes these three are great recommendations and would be suitable for older people. I personally would not recommend Ocean Beach (OB) as it has a high crime rate plus it is very noisy + chaotic there too. |

Yes, the family can most definitely swim in the ocean in July.
August tends to get very hot in San Diego so swimming will be a huge relief! |
Where are you from? San Diego's daily highs are usually in the 70s in August. That's part of what makes coastal Southern California so attractive to some people-- weather is moderate in both summer and winter. |

Coronado is super nice. Hotel Del Coronado is amazing though expensive. They have a pool and the beach is there and is nice throughout the town. There are several restaurants and stores in the hotel. It has a cute downtown. There's a decent walk area on the beach front.
La Jolla is really nice too. North coastal San Diego county has several nice towns: Encinitas, Del Mar, Carlsbad, Solana Beach. I would avoid Mission Bay. Paciific Beach, Ocean Beach and Imperial Beach. You will need a rental car. It gets hot inland and I would stick to the coastal areas. Downtown and the urban neighborhoods can also get pretty hot in the summer. |
