Spelling or Vocabulary Curriculum in MCPS?

We were told that in 2nd grade they do all the spelling in class. No more spelling lists. They need to be able to spell as they are writing things and they concentrate in word "families."

We were told last night at Beverly Farms ES that third grade has dropped spelling/vocabulary this year. What is this county coming to? No time for spelling/vocabulary in the "new 2.0" curriculum? I'm sure this will be well reflected in the writing abilities when this group of guinea pigs reaches middle school and high school. Or the county is just assumming all kids will use spell check on their computers so why learn how to spell even commonly misspelled words. Or my kid is just lucky to be going to one crappy school.

We were told at BTSN that our second grader would be getting spelling word and tests. But they are calling it Word Work now.

Our 2nd grade was assigned 5 words from the 2nd grade word wall - they practice them in class but he needs reinforcment at home. They have a quiz on Fridays. They work on different ways to learn to spell and I've seen huge improvement in his spelling since last year. They seem to be doing a good job on giving the kids different methods for figuring out how to spell the word. MCPS.
