Cumberland, MD

The La vale side seems a little safer and nicer, but subway will still ask you to pay for your sandwich before they make it.

I was the one who had stopped to charge my car. It was at Sheetz. The drug abuse was clear. It was very sad to see.

A few years ago I had to go there with my kids many weekends (if you know....) and we stumbled on the Roy Rogers. It is the best and such a surprise.

Cumberland, in the dark, under some fresh snow looks so cute. Just don't stop.

I wish for Cumberland to get gentrified. Sketchy town in a beautiful setting.

There is a coffee, latte kind of place on Main Street that I love! It's called Cafe Mark. We go up there once a year riding bikes on the Rails to Trails thing and we love that place.

I'm from a depressed area.

Sometimes people are just poor and not meth heads.

I wish Cumberland had the money to clean the stains off its spires. Pittsburgh has largely done that. It helps the atmosphere.

OP here. Are there any places near Cumberland then? Especially for food.

The locals love D’Atri’s. I tried it once and thought Olive Garden was way better, and that isn’t meant as a knock on OG.

Frostburg is about 20 minutes from Cumberland and pretty cute. It has a couple of coffee shops with a college town feel.

Hah, were you visiting the federal prison, or the state prison?

Mountain City Coffeehouse is really good—very pleasant inside. It closes at 2pm.

Stopped in D'Atri's Restaurant (National Hwy) on my way home from Garrett County. It was a pleasant surprise.

Good food in a clean and friendly atmosphere.

Did Cumberland get worse in the last 10 years?
I remember going there about 10 years ago and finding a few cute (not gentrified) shops, restaurants, and artsy type places.
Then I stopped there like 2 years ago and it seemed like not all of it had survived.

The Paw Paw Tunnel on the C and O canal is a cool adventure for kids and historic landmarks nearby. We visited after DD read Captain Kate:

Captain Kate by Carolyn Reeder: A historical fiction book about a young girl navigating the canal with coal barges during the Civil War, perfect for introducing history through story.
