Etiquette for a drop in party

I've never heard of a drop in party. I would assume they mean an open house in which case you can go anytime between the stated hours and stay as long or as short as you want.

Just came from one. Didn’t know them well, so went an hour in and left after an hour. People kept coming and leaving so it was fine.

Whaaat??
I have never heard of a “drop in” party but I would likely arrive sometime in the first hour.

I’ve heard these more commonly referred to as an open house. They’re casual and don’t need overthinking. Show with a small gift, say hello and don’t be the last person to leave. Simple.

We have three kids and don’t plan to stay for the seated dinner, but will go, have some heavy hors d’oevres and wine, and leave around 5. That’s the right amount of time for us, but I understand some people stay for the whole time. The hosts mean it when they say people are welcome. Hopefully the same for your hosts!

This sounds like a nightmare to me. Way too long!!
