Flying- don’t have Real ID

Anonymous
My aunt once had her whole wallet stolen and was still able to fly home domestically. Collect the IDs and documentation you do have, read up on processes, and give yourself lots of extra time at the airport.

California participates in the digital IDs. Could he get that?

My sister flew this summer without real ID and had no issues. She did get there early with a lot of identifying documents.

Op here. The digital ID requires you to scan your existing ID.

A simple Google search would tell you this but you just want to make a big fuss I guess.

Op here. Everything I see on Google says TSA *may* let you fly. Also, getting there “really early” isn’t really an option. We took a 7 am flight a few months ago and got there at 4:30 and there was already a large security line but security only opens at 4 am.

To the person who said to fly without him, that would be tempting and then just let him figure it out. It would also mean we don’t have to make the drive from my parents, siblings, and cousins in Boston to his a few days later in upstate New York. But kids and I would be sad if he weren’t with us for Christmas. His tendency to be out of sight out of mind with stuff like this is very frustrating but he does a lot for our family in other ways including taking good care of me when I got really sick recently.

Also if I go alone my whole family will spend the whole time making snide little comments and jabs about his failure to adult and I don’t want to deal with that either. It’s different when I visit parents or siblings without my DH planning to attend but since he does plan I think I’ll get judged by association.

I know this is not helpful, but this has been a thing for more than a decade. It is really hard to feel sorry for him.

He's going to be staying home.

How expired is his passpor?

According to this: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification

It sounds like if his passport is less than two years expired it should still work. SI summary suggests otherwise, but would hope that the TSA info. Is correct.

That’s AI summary above, not SI summary.

This was the rule when I flew in June on a recently expired passport. I had no issues at all. I also watched another guy easily get through with a regular drivers license and a couple of additional questions.

Sadly his passport expired about 3 (maybe 4?) years ago. Still wasn’t in today’s mail…tomorrow will be two weeks since DMV said they mailed it. I plan to go through papers we’ve saved recently to make sure it’s not caught up in those.

How expired is DHs passport? If it’s less than 2 years, it’ll be an accepted form of ID for getting through security:

Expired ID

TSA currently accepts expired ID up to two years after expiration, for the above listed forms of identification.

Is he a federal worker? The PIV card is a Real ID.

I think you just go to the airport and see what happens. Let the chips fall where they may. If he gets to fly, great. If he doesn’t, he will see the consequence of neglecting responsibilities.

Why would he not be able to drive with you a few days after your originally planned flight? Eventually the CA driver’s license should show up. But the fact that OP is flailing around trying to fix her spouse’s mistake is pretty ridiculous.

You can still fly they just do some questioning and they were talking about adding a fee of $30-10”. I don’t know if they’ve done that yet.
