From what I read it is mostly Illinois with surrounding states and much fewer from far away, with very few international students. When I attended decades ago there were a little more from further away, and quite a few international. It used to be known for that. |
How can your kid NOT have the grades or sats to get in? |
What kind of snobby response is that ?!? |

Very few from my Lake County high school in Illinois attended Southern Illinois. The one who did attended their aviation program, which made a lot of sense. Remember Carbondale is a six hour drive from Chicago. Illinois public universities have different stories as to their enrollment declines. SIU used to be a funky, anything goes kind of place. It attracted an eclectic mix of faculty and people, including Buckminster Fuller. I think that they have lost that culture and have to compete in a declining population base. They used to have nationally competitive sports teams - not so much now. Need to look at their specific programs.
Illinois is largely flat and featureless. This is not the case in the Carbondale Marion metro area. The Garden of the Gods is nearby and is quite chilly and geologically unique. |
+1 This thread may have been intended as a joke thread. |
No, I’m not joking here. The grands still live in the area, plus some uncles & cousins. Plus the cost is an issue. Not everyone is rich, you know! |
My brother went there for a bit- drawn to the art/glassblowing program. He enjoyed it, but transferred back to his original LAC for a smaller campus. The campus is pretty and lots of hiking and outdoorsy stuff to do nearby |
| I visited Carbondale and attended events at the University for the more recent eclipse (by pure luck they had totality during both recent eclipses) and the facilities were quite nice. It is a small town and a bit out there in the middle of nowhere but the actual campus and facilities seemed nice. |
Artistic glassblowing or technical glassblowing for lab equipment, etc.? Vermont has a fair bit of glassblowing in the local business community. Also the Seattle/Tacoma area. Maybe go to college and apprentice simultaneously? Pitt has a custom glass shop. Maybe look for this at other universities? Contact employees and ask about 1:1 learning (self-designed curriculum). https://www.researchservices.pitt.edu/facilities/glass-shop |
Is that Superman statue still at Paducah KY? GoG is nice way to spend a Sunday. |
With a 90+% acceptance rate, you would have to be flunking out of HS to not get in. |
Because OP is a troll. The trolls have been very busy lately here. |

SIUC used to have a very good Forestry program. Not sure if it still does.
The snarky responses on this post though are so depressing. Listen, if it’s not a school you know or are interested in, don’t open the thread! There’s no need to rain on someone else’s parade because you think you’re better in some way. You have no idea why others do what they do so cool it with the mean girl judgement. |

Its got fairly robust grad programs. I’ve run into a number of professors who got their PhD there. If it’s good enough for Walt Frazier…

The insistence that that this post isn't a joke is hilarious. First, Southern Illinois University Carbondale? Second, 90% acceptance? Third, someone posting about interest in glassblowing? This is all a joke meant to have DMV parents take the edge off. I do appreciate the commitment to the gag. |
