Gift for son’s new girlfriend?

I did what my daughter calls a comfy basket: soft fuzzy blanket, fuzzy socks, a candle and a mug filled with Hershey kisses.

Very nice, although I think the stocking + gift is overkill for a GF your kid describes as casual.

Is she staying over and waking up Christmas morning? Do you do stockings for everyone else? If yes, do the stocking. If no, skip the stocking.

How old is the GF?

maybe a tshirt or sweatshirt from her college. incl the receipt in case the size or style doesn't work.

OP here. No, they're not spending the night here, just coming over for the day. We do stockings for everyone else, so I'll definitely do that. I just felt it might be awkward for her to watch us opening gifts with nothing for her to open, which is why I was thinking of having a small gift to open. Maybe I won't do gloves but instead a nice ornament or something like that.

You are very nice OP. Yes I wouldn't invest too much beyond the stocking. It's just something token.

Gloves are good.
Also he may be calling her "casual" so to reduce your expectations and the potential pressure on the poor girl
She may well be a serious girlfriend.

No hand lotion!!!

No lotion unless it is high end. No random cheap stuff in a basket.

I would do an expensive candle like Diptyque and that's it. One nice thing is better than a basket of random stuff.

Gloves would be nice, but you never know a person's style...my in-laws used to always get me gloves, but TBH I rarely wear gloves. Like it has to be below freezing for me to even consider it.

Kind of agree, but what is weird that the son is bringing a "casual girlfriend" to Christmas.

I would not provide a gift.

A box of nice chocolates and stuff a stocking with lottery scratch offs, small containers of unscented lotion, body wash, lip balm.
If she brings a hostess gift have another back up gift ready to give

To someone—anyone?—spending Christmas day in your house while everyone else opens presents?

Casual gf and Christmas? Odd.

Following this closely. OP, what gloves are you thinking about?

She has nowhere else to go this Christmas for reasons that I don't need to explain. Sorry you think it's weird.
