Travel suggestions for long weekend in January

I wouldn’t do most of Europe with that short a trip. Even London — it’s such a slog to get to/from Heathrow and through the awful lines at Heathrow. Maybe if there was a specific show I wanted to see.

I’d say Puerto Rico — will be warm, easy flight, don’t waste on customs lines etc. or maybe even Cancun — anyplace I could get a decent flight and someplace nice to stay that is less than an hour from the airport. Go snorkeling, have some nice dinners, relax.

I might just also do Ny and spend the money on restaurants instead of flights. Or New Orleans.

I would pass on an international trip, unless going to the Caribbean. For a weekend, maybe San Francisco, Tucson, San Diego? Closer to home, maybe NYC, Savannah or New Orleans?

A month away, only a few days, and not yet booked? Go to Vegas. It'll be warm, if you don't gamble, go to the Sphere, and see other shows/music venues. Want outdoorsy stuff? Rent a car and visit Hoover Damn and Red Rocks.

Just ride the train up to NYC. It will be cold but there’s plenty of indoor stuff to do.

I agree with Puerto Rico. You could also consider Aruba, Bermuda - anywhere with a direct flight.

If you want cold, I'd do Toronto or Montreal.

Panama City. Easy flight, fun for a few days. The renovated Sofitel is great.

Mexico City. Also an easy flight. Tons to do. Great restaurants, hotels, shopping etc.

Lisbon. You can totally do Europe for a long weekend. It won't be super warm, but you could catch some nice weather.

Florida Keys
Palm Springs
Las Vegas
Puerto Rico

Not everything has to be international to be worthy.

Mexico City is the best option. Perfect weather, amazing food, good bars, great museums and sights to explore.

Puerto Rico or Quebec, depending on if you want warm or cold.

I went to Iceland one MLK weekend - there is very little daylight (around noon-4 PM and it’s still gray) and it’s freezing. I honestly didn’t enjoy it very much, and although it’s Northern Lights season, there’s still a decent chance that you won’t see them. We went out two nights and missed them. Blue Lagoon in the cold is fun, though.

For a cozy/hygge winter destination, I’d be more inclined to go to Copenhagen. Much more to do there than in Reykjavik and it’s cute and charming, and has great food.

Otherwise, I agree with a PP’s suggestion of New Orleans! I just got back from a work trip there and it was delightful. And the weather is pretty pleasant too.

OP here. Thanks for the suggestions. We are going to Dublin and I’m so excited. Direct flight in and out of IAD, so travel shouldn’t be too much of a nightmare.

WTH would you go to Europe for 3 days

Kind of agree. For vacation, this doesn’t sound fun…at least for me. I can’t sleep on planes, so the first day in Europe is always an awful sleepwalk.

People are different. I’ve done European long weekends many times, including to Dublin, and have never regretted it. I sleep well enough on the plane and usually take it easy the first day, which is fine if you’re just doing a city break. Dublin is particularly easy because the flight is short and it’s not a pain to get to and from the airport. Plus you can spend the first day in pubs and listening to music. Have fun, OP!

Agree that Dublin is an easy flight- not much longer than flying to California. Still, at least when I did the flight, it was overnight and that just wrecks me for the next day.
