I got my college aged son a set of samples, so he could try them and see what he likes. Ulta has some sets, this particular one was Polo.

DD's boyfriend does and it's horrific.

OP, I have a son the same age and he sounds a little similar. Cologne is a great idea. If he is looking to start dressing a little better (as you mentioned), other ideas are henley shirts, "nice" sneakers to wear with khaki pants (Nike Killshot or Roger Advantage by On, and a watch (Shinola is popular).

DS is 20 and has never had a girlfriend, but expresses interest in having one. He is basically a sweatpants kind of dresser but seems to wear khakis and sweaters more now which indicates to me an increased interest in his appearance, which I am guessing is linked to hoping to meet a girlfriend. I know I am speculating a lot but he isn’t much of a share-er .

Anyway I am brainstorming Christmas gifts, and was wondering if a small bottle of cologne would be well received. I have no idea if young guys today wear cologne.

I recently took my teen and college aged sons to the mall and got some colognes at Hollister and American Eagle (A lot cheaper than what my son wanted at Macy's)
My college son also picked some khakis and long sleeves while we were there.

If your son is trying to break free from the sweatpants and hoodies take him to the mall!

The Valentino Uomo Born in Roma Cologne is very popular this year.

It smells amazing too.
