Kindergarten - Congressional vs Potomac Advice vs Flint Hill

Anonymous
Potomac parent here. Our DC loves it and so do we. Although easier to get accepted to K than 9th, being accepted for K is still tough because there is a sibling preference (not even all of them are accepted). I don't know much about Congressional, but Flint Hill and Langley are both great schools, too. I'd definitely apply to all of them and make your decision in March. Good luck!

If your looking for another option - Just down the road is Edlin School in Reston about 10 minutes if that from Mclean. We were at the Langley School and switched and so happy we did. Our daughter is so much more challenged and met at her learning level.

Chances of Ivy admission are very small around here. Also, that should not be the reason you are picking a school for kindergarten. Admissions officers will think you are crazy if that is your focus. Also, if that really is all you care about you are better off in public for sure.

If Ivy admission is really all you care about. You may want to look at Basis which is in Tysons.

I take it that it’s under better management than a few years ago? The original owner/founder was a nut, and the folks she sold it to somewhere are the Covid time were not much better.

Hi all,

My family will be moving to the NoVA area around Falls Church/Tysons area from out of state. We have a 4 year old daughter who's currently in private pre-K.

We've been debating which private school to put her into once we make the move and have been doing some research but wanted some insights from the forum.

Congressional:
- Seems to be more about letting "kids be kids", less academically rigorous in early years and more exploration which may be good for personality development
- K-8 only, so will have the option to explore 9-12 options later on but would likely lose many friends from this transition and cliques may have already formed
- Slightly cheaper

Potomac:
- Seems the most prestigious of the NoVA options
- More rigorous than congressional?
- K-12, if she gets in, we're hopefully "done" with picking schools until college
- I'm assuming it's easier to get in at K vs Gr 9?
- Life long friends through grade 12.

Flint Hill:
- Seems like many people mention this option as a back up if Potomac rejects.

Other thoughts:
- We don't want public options despite how good it is. Not really considering DC options either given the drive
- We hope our daughter has great college preparation and the best chance for Ivy admission (parents are Ivy alumni)
- No plans for 2nd child, HHI is 7 figures.

In our situation, is it better to start her in Congressional then move to Potomac at grade 9 (assuming she's accepted), or just go straight to Potomac for the entire journey?

I'm going to be asperger's honest.

Try to get into Potomac.

If that doesn't work out for whatever reason then go with Langley or Congressional depending on what feels right.

Flint Hill is sort of a third tier choice.

Potomac in K is almost impossible to get into. There are 48 spots. Once they let in the siblings, legacies , big donor and VIP kids, sprinkle in some diversity candidates , you’re realistically competing for 10-20 spots.

I would put her in public school at least for elementary so that she has exposure to people who are different from her both racially and economically. Only child + 7 figures + private school can lead to a spoiled child. (I say this as the parent of an only.)

They've all but eliminated the legacy preference when they realized they had more legacies than spots.

I agree with this. I think the Langley Middle School is actually better than Potomac - don’t undervalue not going through middle school in the shadow of HS. But, Potomac has Langley beat in the 2-5th years. But Potomac has the advantage of never worrying about HS admissions, so that tips the scale. Both are much better than Congressional or Flint Hill. Unless you live in that area vs McLean, those would be no-one’s first choice.

I’m an alum and was nervous when my dd was applying bc there were over 50 legacy kids applying. Some were siblings so kind of a double boost for them. Statistically it’s still a lot easier to get in for K than 9th.

If your goal is Potomac down the road, then I’d also look at Langley and McLean Montessori. If your dd is on the younger side, apply to K at Country Day and then the following year apply to repeat K at Potomac.

They still have the sibling boost and it is pretty significant.

In theory, you can join at any time. I have seen kids join almost all throughout lower school.

Agree with this. Potomac is most prestigious in VA. Go there if you can. If you didn’t get in, then go for Langley and then apply to Potomac again later on.

I would look at other back-ups before Congressional.
