"Infants cared for in the SFR NICU had higher Bayley III cognitive and language scores, higher rates of human milk provision at 1 and 4 weeks, and higher human milk volume at 4 weeks. In adjusted regression models, the SFR NICU was associated with a 2.55-point increase in Bayley cognitive scores and 3.70-point increase in language scores."

It doesn't look like the science is settled on this.

But both those studies are about NICU, which is different from special care nursery.

Ffs. If you want the moms to stay overnight you need to give them private rooms. Stop torturing moms.

SFR, which this study is advocating for, is single family rooms.

Ok that’s good. But I still don’t think moms should be pressured to exhaust themselves.

I delivered via c-section and my kid was at another hospital. Once I was discharged, I spent the first night at home. DH stayed with baby 24/7 until I was discharged. After that we alternated who stayed each night so at least one of us could sleep at home instead of in the chair. The night before baby had surgery we both spent the night.

Good luck, it is hard but we are fortunate we had time off from work and could afford to uber back and forth. Some babies had no family there for days at a time, it was so sad.
