Do smart watches change communication styles?

I was doing tennis drills a few months ago and saw this woman talking into her smart watch while waiting for her next turn. I was blown away. You can't wait until after tennis to respond to someone? Unless your family members is in risk of imminent death without you immediately responding, which is astronomically unlikely, it is ridiculous for you to be responding to messages during tennis.
