Meant to post “do you mind…” |

DC is at an unnamed SLAC - and was falsely accused of a Title IX violation. After months of the process the accuser was told that what they accused of was not unwanted based on evidence (texts to friends and family) However, my child and the accuser are not supposed to be within a certain distance of each other.
On a small campus and with a small student body this is really limiting. I believe on a less progressive campus, the accusation would have never moved forward. This never crossed my mind as we were going through the process of figuring out the right school - but want others to have visibility for consideration |
I'm so sorry to hear this. That's extremely tough for your poor DC. I work in the admin of a large public university, and, sadly, I wouldn't expect much different treatment at larger universities. In terms of Title IX, schools are in a tough spot. If we don't conduct diligent investigations of claims, we're exposed to potential liability to the complaint. If our investigation is overzealous, we're exposed to liability to the respondent. When it comes to sexual assault, arriving at "the truth" is extremely difficult as it's usually a he-said/she-said situation concerning events that happened behind closed doors. Also, everyone demands extremely thorough investigations while contradictorily demanding that those investigations be completed extremely quickly. Plus, there are so many complaints filed with the Title IX Office that have little to do sex or discrimination--e.g., roommate complaints, claims that a professor is bullying a student, etc. But the office is obligated to at least conduct a preliminary investigation to confirm that there isn't a discriminatory nexus. To be sure, sexual assault and discrimination 100% occurs on our campus, and when we recognize it, we truly do our best to rectify the situation. But the chaff is disproportionate to the wheat when it comes such claims. Anyhow, I've greatly sympathized with both the victims of actual assault/discrimination and those falsely accused. I can imagine the effect on the latter would be magnified on a small campus. The MeToo movement was good in so many ways, but it didn't exactly encourage open-mindedness toward the falsely accused. |
+1 as the parent of a sophomore. It’s a damned impressive school and the consortium is fantastic. The location is great too. DC seems to make regular trips to LA and other places of interest within a half day drive. DC, who is liberal, has complained about the lack of diverse political thought though. |
Your kid is an assaulter, and you can’t get over mommy guilt. |

We currently know current students who are super happy at Wes, Midd, Smith, Harvey Mudd, Carleton and Oberlin. Two are related to us and the others are close family friends
Not SLACs, but conversely we know kids who want to transfer or have recently left Berkeley, Santa Cruz, SMU, and Oregon… |
Tell them to go to the Claremont College Republican Club meetings, the two democrat clubs, Bridge Claremont (Neutral politics), Claremont Student for Abundance, Prison Abolition Group, or even the TPUSA chapter. You have to seek what you desire. |
Im so glad to hear that! DD is applying now, and we’re eager to hear more. What does your DS love most? Any specifics you can share about his first few months there? What is he planning to study? |
How dare you say that. Just as likely, the girl is a nut-case with a weird need for attention. |

For parents whose kids are at Pomona - which career paths are they considering?
This is applicable to most LACs but besides Economics, other majors dont seem to have any direct path to employment/career - but rather Grad School or Law. Is that a fair assessment. DC would love to go to Pomona but is not sure what will come out of career outcomes - so is hesitating to apply. |
Sorry to hear of your experience. Our son is a senior, has had the opposite experience: great alumni network, thriving social and romantic life as a straight male, helpful career services if with the usual complaints. Fantastic education and all-around experience. Go Wes! |
NP DC has a wonderful time at freshman orientation. Faculty advisor has been incredibly kind and helpful. Profs, so far, have been top notch and very accessible. Favorite aspect would definitely be the other students — DC’s friend group is very diverse and interesting. We really enjoyed meeting them at family weekend. Roommate assignment is spot on. DC studying Econ and CS. Highly recommend that your student attend a Wildcat Chat to ask all the questions. |
The career outcomes are great, but yes many students go into Law or grad school. Pomona’s number 1 destinations are tech/consulting (California influence, much?), but there’s an infinite number of paths. This question really matters more with what major your DC is interested in. If your DC is a good fit, they should apply. |
My DC will likely look at jobs in entertainment/Hollywood, FAANG, or possibly grad school. Possibly a year abroad. |
You need therapy. |
