How to find a summer internship

Anonymous
Expect to hear from maybe 1 out of every 20-30 applied to. You can research using Linked In-but it’s recommended not to use the link there to apply. Look up the job and apply directly on the company website. Make sure he is going to all the school job fairs.

My daughter applied to about 40 since September so far and is just now hearing back from a couple. One emailed last month and said she passed 1st step and the hiring manager has resumes. One has a virtual one way interview and she has a phone interview lined up with another. Gotta just keep at it. And yes-it’s very important to have an official interview between Junior and Senior Year.

Her friends in finance are applying for summer 2027 internships. The whole process is crazy!

OP, you didn't even mention career counseling at the T50. And he needs to talk to every prof he has and ask for help. Your kid needs to max that out first. Then exhaust every relationship you have. Only then start resume submitting.

Networking and a zillion applications.

First internship through DH connection, but went through several rounds of interviews. Freelanced for them a bit during Junior year.

Second internship submitted 150 apps and got one ultimately through a connection.

Got post-college job at bank after 250 applications, no connection.

+1. And your child should be running this with career counseling. Not you. That's why T-50s have great career counseling offices.

Try asking around to your friends or in your neighborhood to see if there is anyone who knows your kid or your family who works in a similar industry and see if they would be willing to hand walk his resume to the person in charge of hiring interns.

That's how college kids get hired.

Thats not true

+1 Their first internship after freshman year was through a friend of theirs; they recommended DC after working with them on a project, and the friend was impressed with DC's work. They also applied for two workshops with a large company; these were unpaid boot camps but it got DC noticed by the person leading the bootcamps at the company. This was also summer after freshman year.

The second internship was at that company DC did the bootcamp in, which they applied for online.

The next internship coming up this summer was found online. They applied to several (like 50?) and got four offers - all at very well known companies, lowest paid $50/hour. They took the highest paid one at $96/hour, which is also the one they hope to work for after graduation.

You have to hustle. Some kids apply to hundreds of internships online and get like one or two interviews. You should also get your resume reviewed, and make sure you prep for interviews.

DC did all of that. Their interviewing skills are much better than mine. LOL

Every summer, he ends up working at a restaurant or in retail (just like high school). He will be graduating early with an undergrad business degree in Finance. I'm worried he will not find employment after graduation if he can't get an internship this summer. He says he applies online to many, many jobs but never hears back.

what? No kids at T50, but my T20 and my T10(ivy) kids had internships/jobs in their field every single summer even after freshman year. So did all of their friends. Most are on aid and unconnected. they asked professors, went to campus career center, applied everywhere every fall/winter. Your kid is either not trying or the T50 is worlds different from the higher schools.
